speakers no longer mute when headphones inserted

This used to work fine on my dell desktop. Sound running through speakers, inserting headphones would mute the speakers and move sound over to headphones.

I haven't used headphones in a while so I'm not 100% certain when this broke but I recently upgraded to 9.10.

Suggestions?
