I think the real question is what can't you do in a browser? There are web applications for pretty much everything.

Businesses lately have been using more and more internal "cloud" applications (hosted locally on company-controlled servers, but accessible from anywhere on the company's network). Everything from to GIS software, to employee/HR record-keeping, to corporate firewall management, to X, to Y, to... can (and likely has) been done through a web-based application.

In terms of publicly-accessible, everyday things you can do in a browser here's a quick list off the top of my head:

- standard collection of text/spreadsheets/drawings/e-mail office tools (Google Docs & Spreadsheets, GMail, etc...)
- basic GIS (Google Maps, Bing Maps, etc...)
- video/audio streaming
- (s)ftp clients (FireFTP for Firefox comes to mind here)
- local file management (see Konqueror)
- local media consumption (viewing/listening to local audio/video/image files)
- local/remote service configuration (i.e. CUPS web configuration)

I hate doing anything other than browsing in a browser. e.g. I'd rather type my documents in a real word processor than some very limited and slow cloud based word processor.

I'm pretty sure browsers also offer the ability to FAIL, and to occasionally WIN.

Browsers are also the primary purveyor of LULZ to the general public.

It's important to consider the quality of those programs that are doable in a browser. For instance a file browser - even if HTML5 adopts viable drag and drop support you still have to have a serious filesystem api, threads, you name it. But then consider performance, we take a huge step back, you can't do decoding/encoding with a browser, it would be ridiculously slow and other stuff, are we buying powerful hardware to please (lazy) web developers who wanna get into desktop programming? I hope not, I'm myself a web developer (learning C/Gtk) and I wouldn't accept a web-application if I had to buy one, I'd demand a real one, a fast one, that doesn't need a whole browser (and maybe internet) to even be able to run.
