I cannot open Kubuntu even though it is shown in th sessions menu at login and Synaptic shows all in stalled including the Kubuntu-desktop. I have the .iso disk and installed it and then re-installed Ubuntu. KDE still kicks me back out to the Login Screen. I thought it was a hardware issue and changed keyboards but it was working before the upgrade to 9.10.
Any ideas or help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thank You.

When you say Kubuntu is shown in the sessions menu, you mean you are running one Linux install, and you want to use either a KDE desktop or a gnome desktop, from the same kernel. Is this correct?

If so, I am a little confused about your statement that you "re-installed Ubuntu". Did you install the ubuntu-desktop package from within a running Kubuntu system? Or, did you install a fresh Ubuntu system from a CD, perhaps in another partition?

In the past I had Ubuntu 9.04 and Kubuntu. When at the log in screen I could go to the bottom of the screen and choose Keyboard and Sessions. I could change from Gnome to KDE. At this time I have Gnome and KDE but the KDE choice just brings me back to the Login Screen.I tried installing KDE from a .iso that I downloaded and burned. Then I reinstalled Ubuntu from a CD that I burned. Ubuntu works great but Kubuntu will not open. In synaptic the Kubuntu-Desktop is installed as well as the related files.
I do not know where to go from here.
Thanks for trying to help. I really appreciate it.

I guess I don't understand how you installed KDE from an iso. Usually, one would install the kubuntu-desktop package using Synaptic, getting the package from the repositories over the internet. Did you use synaptic to install KDE from a disk? If so, are you sure the KDE you installed is the right one for your kernel?

While you are running Ubuntu, try uninstalling the kubuntu-desktop package, then re-installing it.

If I remember this correctly I installed Ubuntu from "Update"
Kubuntu would not load.
Then I reinstalled Ubuntu from a fresh disk.
I added Kubuntu from Synaptic,
Kubuntu would not Load.
then Installed Kubuntu form a fresh burned .iso Kubuntu Disk
Kubuntu would not load.
I reinstalled Ubuntu from a fresh CD.
Installed Kubuntu from synaptic.
Kubuntu would not load.
When I started I had Ubuntu 9.04 and Kubuntu as a separate OS that would load when I choose it in the Sessions menu on the login screen. "KDE" is still showing up in the Sessions drop menu but will not load. It goes back to login, My partner has the identical set up using the same .iso CD that I used. His works. He thinks it might be a hardware issue because all else is the same.
He is looking for a driver for my video card.here is a list of my hardware.
