Hi. I just started to dual boot Vista and Ubuntu (Karmic) and I was wondering what are the "essential" Ubuntu apps I should download? Is there a CCleaner for Ubuntu, for example, or a better alternative to Gimp? Stuff like that.

Also, I'm really interested in theming Ubuntu (a la Pixel****ers.org) but I'm not even sure where to begin. Any help would be much appreciated.

the second one is for intrepid but where you see "intrepid" in your sources.list, you can change that to "karmic", or whatever version you are on.

as far as theming, I use http://gnome-look.org/ to download new themes, and pretty much anything else you can think of..

Is there a CCleaner for Ubuntu

Try BleachBit. Don't use version 0.3.1 in the Ubuntu 9.04 repo: it's too old/buggy. Either get 0.6.3 from the 9.10 repo or 0.7.2 from BleachBit (http://bleachbit.sourceforge.net[/url)

Here are some good themes for it: http://art.gnome.org/themes

To tell you the truth, most of the "essential" apps are already installed. If you run into trouble you can install apps as you need them.

If you have a fast graphics card though, you may want to try out "Compiz Fusion Advanced Desktop Effects", which can allow you to trick out your desktop in some amazing ways.
