After upgrading to 9.10 I get configuration errors on the following list of items:

netbase
ifupdown
ntpdate
ubuntu-minimal
ftp
libwww-perl
ubuntu-standard
lftp
smbfs
ubuntu-desktop

They all appear to be interdependent and trying to re-install any of them from Synaptic Package Manager yields the same error list.

A clean install seems to always be the best approach. I would use a secondary drive whether it be a normal hard drive or a flash drive and copy over all your needed data to the 2nd drive. Then do a clean install and intelligently copy the data back to the primary hard drive.
