Hi,

I have two disks on my computer:
- sda (a WD disk) is partitioned using gpt and contains karmic
- sdb (a Samsung disk) is partitioned using mbr and contains Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 32 bit

Both systems start properly when their disks is the first in the disk boot sequence in BIOS.

Here is how I performed the installation:
- I set the Samsung disk as the first to boot and installed BCD and Windows 7 on partition 3 and 4 of the disk. (Windows refused to install on a gpt disk.)
- Afterwards, I set the WD disk as the first disk in bios and installed karmic on it.

grub.cfg contains menuentries for Windows 7, but when I try to choose it from the grub2 menu list, it tells me "no such disk". I have searched the forums and googled for a solution without success.

Does anybody know the reason for the problem and tell me a fix for it?


I would also accept a boot manager as a work around to install on the WD disk as sda under the condition (for accessibility reasons: I cannot use a hardware keyboard ) that the boot manager supports the mouse to choose the operating system. In grub2 I use the trick of specifying the system into which to boot next with grub-set-default before restarting.

Let's get a better look at your setup & boot process. Boot the Ubuntu Live CD/USB. Choose "try ubuntu without any changes", when the desktop loads come back here and use the link in my signature to download the Boot Info Script to the desktop. Once on desktop open a terminal and run this command
sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh This will create a RESULTS.txt file on the desktop. Paste the entire contents of that file back here. Once pasted highlight all text and click the # sign on the toolbar to place code tags around the text.

Just wondering why you went with a gpt partition table for the one drive? Is this an Apple computer? - maybe something got confused with the mix of partition table types.

I chose gpt because it is an harddisk of 1TB and I wanted to create a lot of partitions. In the meantime I think that it was an error and that I should have used mbr and work with logical partitions inside an extended partition.

Does anybody know whether I can install grub2 into the PBR of a logical partition of an mbr disk and chainload to it? I already did it with primary partitions if I remember correctly, but what about logical partitions?

For the moment, the relevant partitions with a system are sda5 with karmic and sdb3 and sdb4 with windows.

In the meantime, I wonder whether grub2 does not have problems with disks of different partition types, or even with gpt partitions. For example, I just tried to install karmic into another free gpt partition by using the livecd and by specifying that it should install grub2 into sda10 instead of sda. The result: grub2 did not work any longer and I had to manually reinstall it into sda by using the chroot method from the livecd.

Maybe that I should change the harddisk back to mbr as long as I can afford removing the files that it contains.

There is grub2 on sda10 as the results show. But depending what you wanted to achieve, BIOS can't call it on sda10. You should have some other bootloader on the MBR (Master Boot Record), don't know how it would be called on GPT drives, and then call the sda10 grub2 from there.
That's why if you are planning to use grub2 you should always put it on /dev/sda (MBR of the device) and not a particular partition like /dev/sda10.
Presence has much more experience with this so we'll have to wait for his post too.

PS. You said the relevant is sda5 with Ubuntu 9.10 but you also have 9.10 on sda8 and sdb5. Did you plan to have so many installs on purpose?

I am not sure if GRUB 2 will work with gpt partition table. But either way I would clean up those partitions. You have three 9.10 installs on two disks?

I would try reinstalling GRUB 2 from the live CD. See here (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling%20from%20LiveCD). Remember your root partition is sda5 and you want to install GRUB to sda. If that does not work you may have to consider getting rid of gpt.

As far as using many partitions you can create an extended partition. Once created you cab create as many logical partitions inside the extended as you wish. The only limitation being how much space you allocate for the extended partition. Linux, unlike Windows boots from a logical partition.

Does anybody know whether I can install grub2 into the PBR of a logical partition of an mbr disk and chainload to it? I already did it with primary partitions if I remember correctly, but what about logical partitions?

GRUB2 will install to the boot sector of a logical partition. and you can chain load to it. I had to use the grub-setup command with --force option.

The reason to put it into sda10 is to chainload to it from grub2 installed in sda. This way, each installation remains independent from the others, as far as I understand it.

Yes, I like to use a main installation with all my custom configurations, a backup installation to rsync from, a clean installation,...

The more prudent way probably is to go back to the mbr partition system and use logical partitions, especially since louieb showed that it is possible to chainload to logical partitions. I have started backing up the data from the gpt disk...

You're not achieving anything with that, you can boot them all from a single grub2 on the MBR. And if you are afraid that grub2 will brake somehow, then the chainloading won't work neither. You still need your first grub2 to be functional to chainload to the other grub2.

I know Darko is not a fan of chainbooting but my Karmic grub.cfg is way too long. I know I can customize it and will do so but I still like chainbooting. I also chainbooted into Karmic alpha when I first installed it and it was in a logical partition. It still complains about blocklist being BAD but works. They say it may not in the future, but my understand is the windows boot is a blocklist style boot.

GPT is going to be the future as MBR has a hard max of 2TB. Larger drives cannot use MBR or end up with some kluge to work. Some of the newest windows support GPT but only as data partitions and will only boot from a EFI system. Grub legacy was modified to at least recognize GPT so a not to destroy them. Grub2 supposed will boot from GPT by useing the MBR partition that GPT has but then also requires a BIOS boot partition.

The main reason for using chainloading is that I cannot use a keyboard during startup to choose what installation to boot. Consequently, my grub2 on sda (that is from the first installation) is configured to use the saved value as default menuentry. Consequently, if I want to boot into another installation, I use the grub-set-default command to indicate to grub2 to use that other installation as default. So the computer automatically boots in the other installation. However ,as the menuentry of that other installation has commands to reset the saved value to the installation using grub2 in sda, on the next reboot, it will again automatically reboot into the first installation.

A better way, about how to change the installation to boot from without using a keyboard would be greatly appreciated. I would be able to use the pointer to choose what installation to boot from if grub would support it.
