I just preformed a synamptic update on a 9.10 install with Nvidia kernel mods (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.36-pkg1) used to support an Atom based Ion platorm. I believe the update involved a kernel update (2.6.31-16-generic #52-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 3 22:00:22 UTC 2009)
I dropped into a shell and re-preformed the Nvidia kernel module install and restarted.
Now, upon restart, the x session / window manager (I think it's just the window manager) keeps restarting every few seconds (the menus go away and I can't really use the desktop, but the background stays static and X doesn't seem to fully restart)
Any ideas on how to fix this?
It's not a compviz thing; I turned that off and the behavior is still present.
Apparently the thing that is crashing is called gdm.
...none of the other sticky articles addresses this problem; this is new behavior since I have done several kernel upgrades with recompiled Nvidia supplied kernel mods.
