View Full Version : Laser Printer?

I was just wondering, would it be a good idea to get a laser printer? I do not print much, and I really hate somewhat wet pieces of paper. I only print black and white.

If you think I should, what laser printer should I get? (Has to obviously work perfectly with linux) Please, nothing over 150 -_- and keep the price of toners for replacement below 50 (No, I cannot refill my own, I would have to take it to a store to refill it. I have very shaky hands.)

Obviously, like my camera thread, I have to be able to buy it in-store. Let me repeat myself as well:

No fry's, can't go to costco or sam's club (not a member, need to pay to get in or something.)

Wal-Mart, ShopKo, Best Buy, Radio Shack, Office Depot, Office Max, etc. I have available.

It would be nice to be able to have it wireless/ethernet.

This is what I have (Brother 2170W) (http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/674835/Brother-HL-2170W-Wireless-Monochrome-Laser/)

On sale for less than $100, you can buy it in stores, toner is about $50 a cartridge, has both wireless and ethernet, and works with linux. :D

Mine's an older one. Brother HL1440. Strictly wired, but works perfectly under Linux. It or its "decendant" should be less than $150.00 though the last toner I bought was $60.00. But; I've put reams of paper through it and haven't had to replace that toner yet.

Hope that is at least some help.

Seems I have to upgrade the memory if I want to print from it, if I get a new one.

I know you didn't mention online sites but they can be much cheaper, and laser printer cost usually a bit more than an inkjet, but the upside is that the toner last much, much longer than any inkjet cartridge. I bought my printer over 2 years ago and its still on the toner it came with. And I print maybe a few times a month.

same printer at bestbuy cost a lot more

Need to use paypal tied to bank account, will not use credit/debit anymore, I'm tired of it.

But I hear paypal has fees as well, which seems horrible.

Also, Brother seems to have various issues, especially connecting to wireless without using the software, and incorrect empty toner warnings.

I also have looked at this printer: HP Officejet 6000;

does anyone have it, or have seen it working with linux? Openprinting.org does not have an entry for it.

I might get it instead.

You can use credit cards at newegg, no need for paypal. Works fine for me.

I was sceptical of online buying, but as soon as my first shipment arrived, I was happy that they were able to find me, and the prices were very cheap. Easy to shop around online (even for normal stores you want), and compare prices. Identify stuff you need, then wait for it to go on sale and make sure it is good price compared to everywhere else.

Not for plain text. Mine will occasionally fail to print a picture because of memory, but never failed to print a document.

I have this printer. It's been fantastic but setting up WLAN was a little tricky and it has some issues when you are not using offical drivers. But when you use them it's great.

Using a laser printer makes sense if you want to ultimately save on cartridges and print large documents quickly and efficiently. I've been using laser for the last ten years.

I think laser is definitely the way to go for low-volume black and white print. I do the same, and I got tired of constantly replacing little-used but dried-up ink cartridges, so bought a Brother HL-5040 in October 2003. Now, six years later, I am *STILL* using the original toner cartridge! :D Occasionally the toner light comes on, but I shake the cartridge and it keeps going...

I would still rather not buy online.

To the person who asked about why I do not want the cards: Because it costs money to maintain those for one, I do not wish to pay that money anymore. No, I do not have bad credit, nor have I EVER had a credit card (just debit.)

As for brother laser printers: They have sensor issues that cause the printer to not accept a low toner as low toner, instead, the printer will not print if the toner is low, costing you a pretty penny. I DO NOT want to spend the time to put on electrical tape, Brother just needs to fix their error THEY MADE. Why bother?

I'm confused. If you've never had a CC, how can you not pay the related costs anymore? And what costs are you talking about anyway? Having a CC and using it responsibly is one of the best things you can do to establish/repair your credit.

I do not want one, because I spend irresponsibly, sadly. A debit card costs me 5 USD/yr to use, whether I use it or not. I hardly ever use it, so it went out the door.

I also have a Credit Union, NOT a bank.

You should look into a different credit union. I also belong to a CU and my Visa debit/check card is free. As is online access to my account.

The only issue I have with other credit unions is that I have to have either a large min. balance, have to spend so much a month, etc. to get their free services.

With my current credit union, I only need 5 USD in my savings to have a checking account for free. I can get online access to my account for free too, and I can link my account to paypal for free as well. I also would have to pay for paper checks, which I would never use either. I always use cash.

I cannot have more than 2000 USD in my account at the credit union, otherwise Social Security will get on me, and I will no longer receive as much money.

I do not work, and make only about 750 USD a month, about 1/3 of that goes for rent, and another 80 USD for food/etc. Another 30-60 USD for cable Internet, and another 15 or so USD for telephone.

There are no fee credit cards. So you can get one and not use it and pay nothing.

What you would do if you got credit card is not use it unless you got $ in bank to cover it (like you were buying something with debit). A couple days after you purchase something login to your bank online and pay off the balance. No interest. No fees. And you get to purchase cheap stuff online.

Anyways that's all pointless since you say you have a paypal account, and newegg accepts it, so it all comes down to whether you want to purchase online or at a store. Most big retail chains have price match policy. So if you see something for sale online cheap, you can walk into store with printout and get same price (online must have stock, exact same item, they may add $15 fee for "shipping"). Look at store websites for exact price match guarantee. I bought a laser printer at staples for $100 which they were selling for $250 because it was selling online for $100.

I also use a 2170W. It is quite good, other than the second-rate manual sheet feeder. Connecting to a wireless network without the Brother software is not a problem. There is a lot of toner left in the cartridge when the printer decides to stop printing, but one can cover the detection hole with electrical tape to use the remainder.

As I have said, I am NOT willing to cover the sensors, just too much of a hassle. Brother needs to correct THEIR OWN mistakes, not me!

I've been pretty happy with my HP LaserJet 6L. Picked it up locally on Craigslist and I'm still using the toner that was in it. I've had it for almost two years now printing several documents per week.

No network built in so I purchased a simple wired print server and I've never had an issue. Works in both Ubuntu and Windows.

Thanks,
