View Full Version : Terminal Colors

Old computer screens were only only able to display several colors at low resolutions, and even older ones had single color themes for their console/terminal output.
These colors are available as options or as the default for various systems we use today to type console/terminal commands, but once you had to choose one of these colors when you bought your old CRT 80x24 line monitor.

Which is your favorite to use in gnome-terminal or similar app. (or which was your favorite back then if you used these ancient machines of yore)

I generally use white text on a black background.

Although yellow/white text on a blue background looks nice when using DOS, but it doesn't work as well on Linux because in DOS all text is one color wheras Linux has different colors to differentiate between different file types.

What kind of panel is that? If I'd have to guess, I'd say docky since it got a panel mode. I'm yet to see this implemented though, so your shot leaves me curious.

Gray (#BBBBBB) on translucent black, with my favourite DejaVu Sans Mono and Gentoo zsh prompt, which I use pretty much everywhere.

I'm curious, what panel are you using? The main menu button on the left looks great.

The panel is avant-window-navigator, version 0.4 (I can't believe I'm saying this for not even my screenshots :O).

I voted white because I use a bright grey #f0f0f0 on black.

That is AWN?! Woah, I'm using 0.4 too but I never considered making it into an actual panel. :) Thanks

It's kinda split between green on black and white on black.

I voted green on black. But I never realised that you could make it transparent, so now I am green on a transparent black.

Slightly off white (seems a little less harsh than pure white) on a slightly transparent black background.

I use transparency too on my terminal screen.
Awn is great as a addon, but using it as a window switcher causes problems if you switch metacity for a game or graphics application, since it is part of compositing effects.

IBM SAGE computer is the background.

I prefer to use white text on a black background with about 30% transparency.
