Screen washed out and pixelated

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 and the screen is all pixelated and washed out. It is a dual boot machine and on the other OS the picture quality is fine. This is the second machine I have tried this on and its the same result. How do I fix the pixelated/washed out screen???? I posted this elesewere in the forums but received no suggestions so this is a repost.
