Most of my problems are not ubuntu specific, so i generally get little help from the ubuntu forums. I've tried IRC channels for the specific and while they can be very usefull, they are rarely very active and sometimes have a few anti-ubuntu trolls that blame all problems on ubuntu packaging rather than trying to help fix the issue (looks at #kde). I've also tried the fedora forums (for a fedora issue), but it was totally inactive. Finally I've given reddit's linux4noobs a shot but while i got helpful suggestions it lacked the sort of detailed response you get elsewhere.

So where do you go for "non-beginger talk"?

I'm not trying to be one of those guys that always recommends Arch, but check out the Arch forums and wiki pages for some "non-beginger talk". I also like the Linux Questions Forum for info: http://www.linuxquestions.org/

Arch wiki is the new gentoo wiki :D.

But are the forums accepting of non-arch issues, because i'm currently on ubuntu, even if the problems are rarely ubuntu related

as those above said, both the arch and gentoo wikis are outstanding.

Ubuntu's wiki is kind of weak.

Debian's documentation is... usually some combination of either obscure or much longer than more comprehensive it needs to be.

but, to each his own.

here, look at each and come to your own conclusions:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SSH
http://wiki.debian.org/ssh
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/SSH
http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/OpenSSH

the arch wiki sticks to the basics. tells you step by step how to set up a basic, standard, and functional [TASK X] and assumes you can read man pages and google for the rest.

Yea , this person must not be in the same IRC channels I'm in , they are crazy active , lol. I've never seen a more active community than this one right here.

the #ubuntu IRC is crazy active, but the IRCs for my issues #alsa #lvm #upstart are not. I've asked about my current issues a few times in #ubuntu and rarely got anythng relevent (i did get one lead but it was a deadend).

I've tried the relevent subforums but the only issue i got a reply for, the person helping me ran into the same problem i did and has since disapeared.

Which subforums? If I were you, I'd post again in general help.

Some of the subforums here at Ubuntuforums.org are pretty dead. You'll probably get a better response in General Help.

Okay, I'll go through them now and post a reply to as many as possible. I'm guessing the ones you haven't replied to after someone else have been fixed?

Some of these are very old - should I bother with the older ones?

Anything but the 2 most recent are not relevent anymore. I apreciate the help but this wasn't meant to be a beg for help or an attack on the ubuntu forums, i really do like it round here.

can you give an example of something you might ask that you generally can't get a detailed answer to?

Yes and no. I've seen people help ubuntu users (and other OS users, and people with dual boots of Arch and Ubuntu).

I've also seen people get snapped at when their question gave them away as using a different distro (since it was an ubuntu specific question). I've seen people be really cool and help beginners, and I've seen people snapped at for stupid question (such as myself).

And if the questions aren't OS specific then people probably wouldn't know or care.

Back when I used xubuntu, any question that I had was answered in these forums and usually by a few different people. The only reason I mentioned the Arch forums is that if you read through the bulk of the forum threads they seem a bit higher on the learning curve than most the threads you see here, same thing with the Gentoo Forum..... that doesn't mean that if you asked the same question in the Ubuntu Forums that you wouldn't get the same exact answer as you would in the Arch/Gentoo Forums.

See for yourself, just use the Arch search engine to search your question and see what you come up with.

I've used Arch for over 2 years now and I still like to use the Ubuntu Forums Search engine for certain things. And I've never used Gentoo but I occasionally will have a look at their wiki page and forum and basically anywhere that a Google search gives me.
