Yes that is the type of broadband you have.
Is your computer a desktop computer or a laptop?

Is it this, or does it look very similar?

Thanks for the link, it answered my question above.
"Ethernet, modem" and "wireless isn't part of the 1700's package, so those want Wi-Fi (or Bluetooth) connectivity will have to do so via USB or the single PC card slot."
Do you have "Wi-Fi (or Bluetooth) ... via USB or the single PC card slot"?
UPDATE
Basically what I am looking for here is to identify how you connect to the internet. Once that is know, then the relevant drivers can be searched for, if applicable.
I think it is either an incorrect setting with your Ubuntu 9.10 network connection or incorrect drivers. Given that Ubuntu 9.10 is very good at setting up a connection, I suspect it may be a driver issue, but that is yet to be fully determined.

I connect via the Ethernet.

Please check your ethernet settings against my ethernet settings and adjust accordingly, but not change your MAC address. Does this help?

I have downloaded the manual for your laptop from here:
http://support.acer-euro.com/documents/manuals/notebook/manual_aspire1700.html
Page 25 "Ethernet-based (10/100Mbps) network" Sounds standard.
Page 26 "software modem (V9.0/V9.2 56Kbps)" eg dial up
You said you have ADSL. For that you need an ADSL modem/router. Do you have an ADSL modem or ADSL router?

I went back into Ubuntu, the settings are as you stated, still no connection. I have an ADSL modem. I have to go now, won't be on until tomorrow. Thanks for your help.

Knowing what type of ADSL modem you have will help.
You are welcome, all the best.
