where da prompt is set

I have set the prompt:

PS1='\u \w: '

in both ~/.profile and /etc/profile. It works in VC's, but for some reason on the desktop I get the original prompt. Anyone know where gnome or whatever manages to supercede the bash prompt?

[never mind...found it in ~/.bashrc, vis, used in xterm]

Assuming that you use bash: ~/.bashrc
