View Full Version : What do you wear on your head during winter?

This mostly applies to those of us that live/work where it gets cold during the winter.

I prefer to have a hooded coat at work.

When I go out on the town, it's my cowboy hat.

Nothing, my long hair is a good enough insulator;)

cap without ear flaps - or (and) hoodie- depending from weather

Usually nothing. However, if it's cold enough for my ears to hurt (usually lower than -10 C) then I'll wear a hood. I don't like having hat head after I take off a tuque.

A hood...on the 7 days a year when it actually seems cold. I'm at a similar latitude to florida or morocco so 'cold' is relative LOL

I haven't experienced winters cold enough to warrant anything more than my hair on my head.

A toque (http://images.google.ca/images?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=com.ubuntu:en-US:official&hs=zCy&q=knit+toque&revid=159400633&resnum=0&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=OlcZS-qxGIGgsgOSotH8BA&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=5&ved=0CC0QsAQwBA), when the temps go below -10°C

where I live our winters are not cold enough to need a hat, average is 14c (57f). In the summer I wear a hat to keep the UV off due to the sodding great Ozone hole above us.

I used to wear baseball caps but the ears still fried so I now use these http://www.akubra.com.au/

A knit cap, constantly even when sleeping, except when I am wearing my ski helmet.
This is one of the most oddball threads I've seen here, but I can relate.

I've got very short-clipped hair, so once the weather turns cold I wear a woolen/wool-like hat. I've currently got a Thinsulate hat - no ear flaps but I can pull the sides of the hat down to cover my ears. But I'm thinking of getting myself a hat with ear-flaps, my ears suffer dreadfully in the winter.

Yeah. I actually wasn't sure what the right spelling was at first. Wikipedia seems to think tuque (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuque) is the right spelling.

my winter armor has many different configurations, based on the conditions. if the hood isn't enough, i add my stocking cap under it, and if that isn't enough, I break out my scarf.

if all you can see of me is my eyes, then I am at the maximal level.

Edit: based on discussion, I have learned that my "stocking cap" is called a Tuque. who'd 'ave thunk it...

People round here seem to call the hats you class as "toque" as "beanie hats". I have no idea what either means.

I've always known them as beanies... toque is a new term to me.

I'm from Toronto (Canada) and I've never heard anybody say beanie, but most people say tuque.

I used to have little bit long hair during winter to keep me warm. I also wear a bluetooth head set to prevent cold air touching my ears :)

i think it's like the american color and the canadian colour.

no i meant canadian.
canadians take a lot from the brits. our original laws, our measurements and our spelling of certain words.

Around here, we call tuques toboggan hats. I've never heard them called tuques until I read this thread.

I've learned a lot from these forums. I also learned that a toque is a chef's hat.

As with the other Canadians. I usually wear a touque but I lost mine, so now it's a fur hat. It's been -35 for a month and I work outside...

The idea of a 'stocking hat' makes me think of a hollywood bank robber with panty hose on their head. And the name beanie allways give me the image of a wannabe helicopter.

@Noahall's "I think you mean the British colour and the American color."

In Canada it's actually law that we spell words such as labour, odour, colour, neighbour, etc with the 'u'. Though, I am sure it's not really enforced anywhere except english class.

I wear an Icelandic hat made from sheepskin. That and my long, gray hair and beard makes me look like Santa Claus, I have been told.

I agree, but that is the term I've always heard.
I guess when I think about it, I think of the old pointy (yet limp) hats people used to wear in the victorian period. makes me think of scrooge.
