software management tool

I am trying to install a program - and the package installer is not letting me install b/c you can only use/run one software management tool at a time. I looked under startup programs - and deactivated the update manager - but it still isn't working the only windows open right now are firefox and the package installer. Where should I look to close any other software management programs?

do you have a terminal window open with apt-get?

are any other users logged onto that computer at present (possible via the 'switch user' thing... if they started 'software center' and then hit switch user, for example, than that user still has software center open because they never truly logged off.)?

either way, a fairly surefire way to solve it is to restart. not the ubernerd way, but will probably fix it.
