Hi guys, I'm helping out a friend who lives in another country by proxy. She has problems accessing the internet, so I'm posting this for her.

Anyways, she installed 9.04 and had problems with her wireless, a USB wireless card. I gave her some advice on what she could do, including testing WICD, restricted-modules and finally updating to 9.10.

I don't know if she tried the first two, but she updated to Karmic, and immediately encountered problems.

She took pictures of the process:

As you can see, X doesn't load properly. Here is what she said:

"Also, the last time I tried to boot it, I went across the top of the keyboard, pushing F1, F2, F3, etc. all the way down... just to see what would happen.
Eventually it booted, so I haven't turned it off since.. that way I can back up all my files as soon as I get some blank CDs.
But there is a warning message at the top that says that my HD has thousands of bad sectors and needs to be completely reformatted."

I don't know where she's getting that message from. Did her HD die?
