I have Ubuntu on my kids' netbooks, and I want to install it on my desktop. It's an old PIII, Compaq 5BW, with a 9GB HDD. I presently have Knoppix installed, but I've also had Ubuntu, Fedora, PCLinuxOS, and other distros installed. Now, I can't get the Ubuntu 9.10 CD to boot through the installation process. It hangs on the LiveCD or on the Installation process at the Ubuntu Logo. When I used the alternative boot, I saw the verbose screen freeze at trying to initialize the HDD, or so it seemed. What I'd like to know are the system commands to use from a Knoppix console to install Ubuntu. Can someone tell me if this is possible and post the commands?

with a 9GB HDD.

Hi and welcome to the Ubuntu community!

Please be aware of the minimum requirements:

With Knoppix installed on a 9GB HDD, I would think that there is little or no room to do anything else.

In addition to the question mark over the available space, the GPU MB becomes relevant.
