I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 with Grub 2. The boot menu works but after the Windows 2000 entry it displays remnants from Ubuntu 9.04 kernel 2.6.28-16-generic. Synaptic shows 2.6.28-16-generic was removed from the computer. How do I remove the remnant from the Grub 2 menu?

from 9.10 open a terminal and run
sudo update-grub and see if that fixes it.

I had ran the command before submitting the question and was puzzled when it didn't work. Tried running it again in response to your comment. It still doesn't change the Grub boot menu. In the messages the command generates it says "Found Ubuntu 9.04 on /dev/sda6". Some remnant is hanging around I don't know how to remove.

Let's get a better look at your setup & boot process. Boot into Ubuntu. Come back here and use the link in my signature to download the Boot Info Script to the desktop. Once on desktop open a terminal and run this command
sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh This will create a RESULTS.txt file on the desktop. Paste the entire contents of that file back here. Once pasted highlight all text and click the # sign on the toolbar to place code tags around the text.

There are no "remnants" of 9.04. It looks like you have root (/) on sda6 and /boot on sda5 which is a 9.04 install. If you don't want 9.04 then remove sda5 & sda6 from gparted and then run from terminal
sudo update-grub

If you want 9.04 and it won't boot from GRUB 2 then we'll try to work on that. To sum it up you have both 9.04 & 9.10 installed.

The selection never worked on the boot menu so I assumed it was a remnant. When I went looking there was a 99 mb partition with the previous, 9.04, version on it. Deleted it and ran update-grub and everything is correct now. Thanks for the help.

The selection never worked on the boot menu so I assumed it was a remnant. When I went looking there was a 99 mb partition with the previous, 9.04, version on it. Deleted it and ran update-grub and everything is correct now. Thanks for the help.

glad you got it sorted out. Enjoy Ubuntu.
