Hello,
I'm currently cycling around South America, and recently plugged my iPod (nano) into my friend's laptop (an Eee PC running ubuntu) and used rhythmbox to play a song. My iPod was evidently upset by my betrayal and punished me by messing up my playlists. The folders are all gone so everything appears as a list, and more importantly, smart playlists have turned into normal playlists, so songs stay in them even when they no longer match the criteria. So the Unrated playlist still includes songs that I've rated. And so the hours I spent carefully crafting playlists to provide enjoyable music for the next 6 months appears wasted.
I've had a look at what information I can find about using programs in ubuntu to create new smart playlists, and Banshee seems my best bet. But nowhere says explicitly whether the smart playlists created in Banshee would appear as smart playlists on my ipod, and auto-update as such. Nor are there any details of whether I would need to create a library on a seperate harddrive, or if I can just use the ipod itself (not much space on an Eee...) I'd love to try and work it all out for myself but borrowing his laptop demands extensive favours in return. I don't really want to agree to carry his water for the next 3 months only to find out that I still can't get smart playlists to work, so I'd prefer to be sure before I embark on what will undoubtedly be a long, long procedure.
I'd really appreciate any help anyone can give! By the way, visit Río Colorado in Argentina. I have never seen so many beautiful women in one small town, and there's a great bar and even better campsite.
Thanks,
Nick
P.S. Apologies if this is posted in the wrong place - I don't know which program to use so thought generic ubuntu forums would be the answer...
