View Full Version : Tired of '+1'

james_xxx
December 1st, 2009, 08:37 PM
This whole '+1' business has dropped to a coolness level of zero. It was sort of cute the first few thousand times it showed up as a stand-alone response.

Now it has sadly come to the point that +1 is just the default response for people who don't really know what else to say.

I would propose a word filter that would replace all instances of '+1' with THISUSERHASNOTHINGINTERESTINGTOSAY, were it not for the fact that '+1' has a few legitimate uses, such as 'Ubuntu +1', for example.

Anyone else feel the pain?

(Out before all the +1's!)

Some forums actually issue warnings and possibly ban users for being spammers or trolls when they use single word responses like "+1" or "lol". Its doesn't contribute to the topic in any respectable way.

This has been discussed to death. +1 means "I agree." If no one is allowed to say something that hasn't already been said, no one will say much, because a big part of a functioning community is agreement. If we're not allowed to agree, everything will grind to a halt. It also defeats the ability to reach consensus.

Imagine this: Person A expresses his opinion, person B expresses her opinion. 99% of people agree with person B, but because agreement is frowned upon, the thread ends right there and both people get an equal say. Even though clearly person B deserves a greater say.

So unless you propose that I plagiarize posts whenever I agree with one, "I agree" is here to say.

I think it's a good sign that something like "+1" exists. It means we agree enough that an abbreviation needed to be invented. That's a sign of a healthy community of more-or-less like-minded people.

Showing that you agree is good, nobodies denying that, but wouldn't it be more productive in a conversation to give some kind of example or reason as to why you agree rather then just a lazy +1.

for instance

"Ubuntu is awesome, I love the compiz cube."

"+1"

vs

"Ubuntu is awesome, I love the compiz cube."

"I agree, I don't see how so many people can think compiz sucks. Its more productive for me, and it looks good while doing it."

Its especially useless when people are debating about something and some clueless third party comes in and says something like +1 without showing any sort of reasoning to back up their claim.

There is a time when +1 is acceptable, but all too often it gets abused either for the sake of gaining post count, or just attempting to sway a debate without actually contributing to the conversation.

Where would we be if everyone decided that killing buffalo by hand "builds character?"

Written language hasn't really been a language until now, not the same way that spoken language is. Written language is starting to move beyond prose, becoming an actual conversational method of communication. Things like "+1" are a natural consequence of that.

I reply with +1 when the user has said everything that I wanted to say and there's nothing more to add.

By simply putting +1, it lets the OP, as well as other users, know that I completely agree with the statement.

Yeah, it could, but who really cares if something like that is abused?

Many people would care if that is abused (forum junkies, MODS, etc). My brother used to roam a WAY smaller forum than UForums, barely 30 people roamed the forums at a single time. And yet REP abuse was crazy. I don't want to imagine it here, where no less than 14894 users are active at a time.
