Caller: “I need to report a very serious computer crime! The local university is running an illegal computer system!”

Me: “Could you please repeat that?”

Caller: “The local university is running an illegal computer system! They’ve hacked it!”

Me: “How could you tell they’d hacked it?”

Caller: “Well, when it booted, it didn’t say Windows or Microsoft or anything! It said something about Deviant Linux, I think, and the main screen looked nothing like my good, legal Windows screen at home! I think they hacked that, too!”

Me: “Do you mean Debian Linux?”

Caller: “Yes, that! Is it some sort of computer mafia or something?”

Me: “Uh, no, it’s just a different operating system. Nothing to worry about.”

Caller: “But it’s illegal! It’s not Microsoft, not even Windows! They’re on a normal Microsoft computer, so they’re breaking the law! I think they stole my identity when I came in the building! I’m calling the FBI!” *hangs up*

Well, for someone seeing a different system for the first time, "Deviant" is quite a scary word. :)

I can't stop laughing!

It's quite scary though how Microsoft has penetrated people's minds and conditioned them to think if it isn't Windows, it isn't authentic, legit and legal.

Very scary.

Does anyone else wonder how many of these kinds of 'conversations' actual ever happen? They always seem so... orchestrated and unbelievable.

There is already a thread on this.

Linky?

Better proxy that or the other thread might start flinging accusations of illegal hackery on this thread.

Watch out now it was started by a mod, you don't want the wrath of Kahn.

Agreed. I'm betting most of them don't happen, and the rest are hugely overblown versions of what actually did happen.

Whether or not this story is 100% authentic, I don't find it difficult to believe something like this could happen.

Let's be honest, there's a lot of people out there who think PC = Windows. Those stupid I'm a PC ads don't help.

Having worked tech support in both the private sector and at the university, I have no problem at all believing it.

But some of them actually happened. (https://www.centos.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=127)

This guy claimed 22 years as a computer engineer? Tell me again why I I'm spending my GI Bill majoring in computer engineering, when there are yahoos like this that are barely capable of e-mail correspondence doing the job already?

Me: hello, I'm here to interview for a position?
HR: What position is it?
Me: Jr. Computer engineer
HR: Have a seat, if you get bored, theres and etch-a-sketch you can play with.
Me:
Interviewer: I understand your a computer engineer?
Me: Yes
Interviewer: Do you have any experience or educational background?
Me: I just played with an etch-a-sketch for a half hour!
Interviewer: You start Monday!

I've heard PLENTY of stories like this. I'm never sure whether to laugh or cry.

But some of them actually happened. (https://www.centos.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=127)

IMHO, there are some people who you just need to abandon after a while, and let them drown in their own ignorance. This is a great example

I'm having a hard time believing this. About 50% of the time, the people posting on notalwaysright are dumber than the people they're writing about.

He tasks me. He tasks me and I shall have him! I'll chase him 'round the moons of Nibia and 'round the Antares Maelstrom and 'round Perdition's flames before I give him up!
