C compiler cannot create executables

Hi everybody
I am a new user with very little background knowledge and i will be grateful for any help
I am trying to install some program on my computer and that program require installing NETCDF
when trying to install I get the error:
¨ C compiler cannot create executables¨
I have g++ installed
and
build-essential is already the newest version

do you have some other solution for me
