in places (at the top of the screen menu bar), the shortcut folders get placed in a section called "bookmarks" when you add too many folders (i currently have 13). i dont want that, is there a way to change it so they all show up in the menu (like in a fresh install when there were only a couple of folders)

There is a way: compile gnome-panel yourself and modify the maximum number of 'places' before it is put in a subfolder. There is a howto on these forums somewhere.
Edit: it is here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1066964).
