installer fails on macbook pro 5,5

Installation of 9.10 on macbook pro 5,5 fails at the language selection stage [error: ubi-language failed with exit code 2] or prior to partitioning [error: ubiquity.components.partman failed with exit code 2].

This has been the case if I boot the live disk first and then attempt to install, or if I try to install without booting the live disk. Neither works.

I did manage to get through 9.10 installation on the same machine no too long but decided to reinstall after breaking some things. Unfortunately I didn't get around to making an image of the partition.

ubi-language failed with exit code 141. Further information may be found in /var/log/syslog. Do you want to try running this step again before continuing? If you do not, your installation may fail entirely or may be broken.

I also got a similar message when installing Ubuntu 9.10 on a Toshiba laptop.

I am having the same problem on a dell inspiron B120 using ubunt 10.10. Has anybody found a solution?
