Please, DO NOT mention the following:

Gmail
Yahoo
Hotmail
GMX

All I need is an account with no big storage ( max. I've ever used is 50MB/year ) and the ability to get my messages through IMAP and/or POP3.

** This is not Bash - names are NOT case sensitive ( @ Psumi ).

Hmm, get a dedicated server at godaddy.com and do it yourself. Otherwise you should have your Geek Card revoked.

Bingo! E-mail for nearly $150/month - I'll definitely give it a try someday.

What's wrong with your isp's email service? Most isp's have web mail, so it's not a matter of not being able to access it from anywhere in the world.

What's wrong with your isp's email service?

I'm allowed to have only 1 e-mail account which is already in use by someone else ( family member ).

They used to have their own mail service. But now, yeah. It seems it was bought. Still, the domain is cool.

Get a Linode (http://www.linode.com/?r=a31fce4c50571a0517d39099313b8138a047c534). Setup a mail server on it.

Also, what's wrong with the mail services you listed?

While it's still not free from ads, I like it ( + awesome domains :D ) - thnx :)

What's the big deal about having too much space you don't use? I only use a fraction of my gmail space. It isn't a waste because that space is not allocated to me unless I need it. With addons in Firefox I see no ads whatsoever, and being Google it isn't likely to close down any time soon or start charging fees. It also has pop and imap access which worked perfectly for me when I was using alpine a while back.

Anyone not using one of the large providers is likely to find the service eventually closes down and they have to find a new mail account somewhere else.

i use gmail and sometimes hotmail, gmail in particular is very good from a functionality viewpoint, however I do sometimes have concerns over the fact all my emails are in the hands of google. Coupled with the fact I search the web with google, blog with blogger, google wave etc.. there is a heap of information they 'know' about me.

I'd kind of like to move to away from google, but too lazy to do anything about it , lol. I've been herded in with the masses

Uh...

gmail+1 I am trying to think of another email service to recommend and come up empty.

You could for $10 a year, buy your own domain through Google and one of it's partners (I prefer eNom) and have yourchoiceofname@yourowndomain.com/net/org/info/biz and have the beauty of it being gmail still, just not @gmail in the email address but the domain of your choice.

You might want to look at FastMail. I haven't used it myself, but I remember reading about it somewhere. (Maybe it was on UF.)

Linux.com (http://www.linuxfoundation.org/about/join/individual/join) A small fee for a good cause, and ultimate geekage points

Do you mean mail.com?

I had, or rather my wife had, a mail.com address for a while. It was a royal pain-in-the-neck by the end of it.

Right now I am using a Gmail account which I access via IMAP (Mozilla Thunderbird), and I have a domain account which forwards directly into my Gmail account (so I don't have to connect to a whole bunch of accounts, just one).
