Hello I am a complete beginner and thought I would try linux.
I had a copy of a CD that came with a book Ubuntu Linux version 6.10 but I could not get sound to work.
Anyway I downloaded 9.10 iso and installed it.
It certainlly looks the part but after installing it freezes within a few seconds after its started up and I have to switch off at the wall.
The only option I found was choosing Gnome failsafe it seems to work.
I saw a lot of similar and slightly different issues posted and many different suggestions but I don't understand which is the same as mine.
Sound is okay at first and then it stops working.
Can someone tell me what Gnome failsafe means - if that's the choice that works should I just carry on using it or will I be missing some functionality ?
I don't know if the freeze problem is connected with sound or are there 2 problems, how can I tell ?
Is it that ubuntu just won't work with this computer or is there a way to narrow it down to a particular device.
It certainlly seems to be a bug that it freezes without an error message being displayed.
I am putting up this lspci output that I saw other people had included in the hope it gives enough info about my system.

Thanks.....

Its a MESH computer that came with windows vista premium.
I think its called a MESH ELITE JUNIOR PLUS.
I installed from an ISO image and chose to use all the hard disk - all defaults, it seemed to work fine.
After displaying the desktop I can log on with username and password, then it freezes after a few seconds.
There was a drop down to choose gnome fail safe and it seems to work with that.
sudo lspci -vvv

The intel video driver is in state of flux. Maybe try the slightly older 9.04 (supported for another year) and see if that works better?

Thanks for replying, I eventually downloaded a different linux called debian that works although it does not look as nice as ubuntu and took a lot longer to install.

Debian is actually the upstream distribution for Ubuntu, so you aren't that far away :-) I personally got tired of the length of Debian installs back around 1995, though they've improved some since.
