I wrote this howto after finally finding a fix the the crappy ATI proprietary driver performance, mainly the slow maximizing and resizing of windows. Now I'm not sure if it'll work for everyone, but it worked for me and many others. What it basically does is patches your xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core and does something to something called backfill.
