I'm sure this isn't the only such example. Why sell FOSS? It's a horrible buisness model. Nothing stops you from building from source. And they can't do anything about it if it's distributed. :s

At least they provide the source code. However, they do not release the modified code.

It's not really a business model, but they're just hoping that people will decide to pay for it if they find the software useful. Kind of like asking for donations to download software; you don't have to pay but it would help out the developer.

Why not? It gives developers the incentive to continue developing their software.

See the news entry for 11-Jun-2008? I find it amusing that people are apparently complaining about the Linux version not being updated quick enough.

I thought they did provide the modified code. Because I've seen forks of the Windows versions of Xchat where people will just take the source code, remove the "please pay to use the full version" addons, remove the Xchat logo, and release it as a different product. Just like the Debian people do with Firefox/IceWeazel.
