Hey all,

I'm the author of the Top5 column, and I'm starting to run short on ideas. If you have a suggestion, post below, and I'll work on getting it into a future edition.

Thanks!

As in the last FCM issue was article about server, it will be quite interesting to know what can it do. I mean not common functions like own website or ftp server, but something like controlling your house via web cams connected to the server or simple torrent client, programs to make file storage on server etc.
ps: excuse for bad English, but I hope I've helped somehow.
pss: thanks for excellent work in previous issues

Window managers would be interesting, especially since it's possible to run a non-Metacity/Compiz WM on top of a standard GNOME (and presumably KDE and Xfce) environment.

Suggestions:
1) Openbox
2) Fluxbox
3) Xmonad
4) Awesome
5) IceWM
6) Openbox
7) Openbox

IIRC, switching to Openbox was as simple as

sudo aptitude -y install openbox && openbox --replace
and had a noticeable performance boost.

In a similar vein, you could do Ubuntu derivatives. There's a lot out there, but the only one that's coming to mind is Crunchbang.

Oh, also Ubuntu Christian Edition (and Satanic and Muslim editions), Hannah Montana Linux, Fluxbuntu, Ubuntu GTK 1.2 Remix...

You could group derivatives by some kind of association: religious, Desktop environments (kde, gnome, etc.); weight (light and normal), etc

Derivatives - how has no one yet mentioned - Mint!??

Top 5's; maybe its time to redux some of the big categories since the first round in the early issues; who are the winners/losers/new entrants (how times change) Cue 'Pick of the Pops' theme music. "Not-half, mate!" RC

I was trying to ignore the Hanna Montana remix (v. pink and sparkly according to one reviewer), racy Annie Leibewiz photoshoot not withstanding...

We're going to get ourselves a bad rep... RC

Top 5 must install apps after an Ubuntu install

A good 'un, but tricky. As everyone has their own ideas on what their first five install apps are. But might be an idea to let people submit their Top5 'must have' apps? But I don't want to make Andrew seem redundant! :D

Top 5 Ubuntu and GNU/Linux sites :)

How about a round-up of the previous year's top 5's? I'm sure plenty of applications also released major (read: exciting!) versions since then.

Top 5 sites sounds awesome, but if I miss something... I'll get thousands of emails. I like emails, just not flame mail ;)

Round up: I'm trying to do that once every twelve issues (following the FCM year instead of the calendar year). Stay tuned :)

How about Top 5 audio-conferencing 'solutions' (sic).

Declaring an interest; looking to source a reliable good quality tool for recording the podcast. RC
