Are there any good texts geared toward someone who does not have a background in mathematics? I'd like to have some sense of the history of the field and what topics researchers are currently interested in.

I taught myself a complete semester's worth of formal logic in a week's time so I don't need a journalistic guide for the intellectually helpless. I just need something to work through that assumes the reader whose mathematical training ended at integral calculus.

You don't really need much knowledge to delve into number theory. I have and like this: http://www.amazon.com/Number-Theory-Dover-Advanced-Mathematics/dp/0486682528

Yup, that seems to be the classic. I thought it might be over my head but I will check it out ASAP.
