View Full Version : [ubuntu] No window manager starting when Compiz enabled

I'm having a slight problem with a fresh install of Karmic on my 2009 MacBook Pro (with Nvidia 9400GM card). Compiz enables beautifully, although the strangeness occurs when I reboot: no window manager (Metacity nor Compiz) starts when I login automatically to Ubuntu. My cursor is the spinning ball, indicating that the Gnome session manager is trying to launch something. If I manage to navigate to the Appearance settings without other windows overlapping, "Visual Effects" is set to None. Compiz reenables - window borders and all - after two minutes of driver searching if I hit either of the effects options (Normal or Extra).

Obviously, I'd like Ubuntu to start seamlessly with a window manager. Hopefully I can work that out... any ideas?
