specifically what i am trying to do is create an extremely minimal install of a debian based Linux distro that will fit on a 512mb flash drive. So far, I've tried a lot of distros and none of them have what I'm looking for. I've tried doing a CLI install of ubuntu and then only installing XORG and Gnome, but the footprint is far too large. I've tried Crunchbang Lite which is also too large. I tried out Dpup (a Debian build of Puppy Linux) which I can't get to boot. I tried out a distro called Bonzai Linux which has everything I'm looking for except for gnome (it has KDE), and I can't figure out why nothing will install through Apt. I'm thinking that a DamnSmallLinux hard drive install is the way to go, but I can't figure out how to install gnome.

Gnome is far too large for 512mb. Check out one of the "micro distros" like SliTaz or Puppy. They use lightweight windows managers (openbox or jwm) and are designed specifically to install and run fast from a flash drive.

Or, get a bigger flash drive and you can run good old Ubuntu no problem.
