Running it now. A fantastic release. No issues after running the RC for several days. And the same goes for the stable release. Rock solid thus far.

Thanks for the bump - checked it a few hours ago and thought I'll need to wait a few more days till I see it on the main page. Downloading :)

Yay. I hope they now include apturl support, so all those linux mint people using getdeb won't come complaining "it doesn't work" when linux mint is breaking the stuff.

Uncle Spellbinder

Well, as it's based on Ubuntu (Karmic) and uses Pulse Audio, they are very similar. There are some nice things added by default - all codecs installed with OS, MintMenu, MintUpdate, APTonCD and some other nice Mint-specific things to play with.

I have a 64 bit system running the 32 bit Mint 8. Sees nearly all my memory with the 2.6.31-15-generic-pae kernel.

what's "nearly all" your memory

Ubuntu 9.10 and Mint 8 both see 7.9 GiB memory.

The gibibyte (GiB) is closely related to the gigabyte (GB), which in some contexts is defined as 109 bytes = 1000000000bytes, but has been used as a synonym for gibibyte in others. Assuming the former definition, 1GiB = 1.024GB.

Why would anyone use Mint instead of Ubuntu? Just curious, are there any benefits except the menu?

What's really nice is none of the scrambling to get typical multimedia needs met. Already set and ready to go upon install of the OS. DVD, audio/ video (mp3/avi/DivX...), browser plugins, Java...all installed automatically. On Ubuntu Karmic, my plugins for Firefox had the default Mozilla plugin. That's it. A fresh install of Linux Mint and here's what I see in SeaMioonkey (sharing the Firefox plugins)...

There's much more, too. Not "just the menu".

That's just one benefit. It's just another take on Debian/Ubuntu Linux. Hell, there are still Debian users who say "Why use Ubuntu? You already have Debian?"

It's Linux. That should be enough.

I have Ubuntu installed(along side Debian) so I can help people solve their problems. There's a much bigger market for Ubuntu support than for Debian support. Is there any differences, support wise, between Mint and Ubuntu? E.G, the method of downloading/install drivers etc.

Uncle Spellbinder
November 29th, 2009, 01:17 AM
Subtle differences. Suffice it to say that Mint is closer to Ubuntu than Ubuntu is to Debian.

But again, that's not the point. They will, in time, grow further apart as more independent development occurs on things more 'Mint-specific.' Until then, it's a damned nice LINUX distro that I and many others are enjoying.

pointy-clicky directions will be different.

CLI stuff about as different as Ubuntu and Debian are different - not much, but enough that i can't say it's "always" the same.

According to http://distrowatch.com/ and their page-hit ranking, Linux Mint is #4. Behind Ubuntu, Fedora and OpenSuse.

EDIT: Still broken.

It will be interesting to see if Mint8 works better for people who had issues with Ubuntu 9.10. I doubt it though. Do the Mint people fix ubuntu stuffs and then release it? Or just build their disro branding around ubuntu?

I used Mint 7 for about two months and absolutely loved it. I would recommend it to any Window user/newbie who wanted to try Linux for the 1st time. I've since moved on to Karmic. Funny but now I would recommend Ubuntu to the same noob crowd only AFTER they spent time in Mint first. (Baby steps)

But I wish the Mint developers all the best. They've put out a great product. Maybe I'll load it up in Virtualbox & give it a spin one day.

gecko media player bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gecko-mediaplayer/+bug/489191

if you want a bug looked at then type ubuntu-bug packagename, let it submit the report and then type in what you think is going on.
Try to be as accurate as you can. this way everyone in the linux community benefits from better code.

Indeed.

Starting a thread when threads already exists that are several pages long, so I direct them to the current one in which discussion has already been taking place.

Only makes sense not to clutter the boards with the same topic listed over and over.

I tried mint a while back I thought it looked nice but was unable to proceed because the wireless drivers were not installed unlike on Ubuntu and because I had a problem in that my lan ports on my router were U/S I couldn't even get ndiswrapper so I could set up the proprietary drivers for my wireless.

Mint8 looks nice. Possibly when I have my 'other PC' up and running I will try it in that one.

Just as a query linked to the above when I tried quite a few Linux types, mainly the 'big names' I always seemed to fall foul of no drivers for wireless and no ndiswrapper as part of the standard package so I could try and get on line.

Ubuntu did so why aren't these areas fixed as standard as part of the install process. Perhaps they are now. But I also have a new router so I can hard wire if required. But I am curious about this spotty coverage.

regards

Fenris

I used Mint for a few releases a couple of years ago, then I just didn't see the point so went back to Ubuntu.

I don't think there is enough of a difference to install it over Ubuntu. Mainly because I have a script to install all the additional programs and codecs, so installing Mint saves me all of 2 minutes of not having to get codecs. I also do not like the default theme for Mint or Ubuntu, so again Mint really doesn't offer me much over Ubuntu.

In addition to that they did not support 64-bit versions back when I was using it, which seemed odd as other distros has been doing it for years.

If they gave 64 bit releases the same priority as 32 bit I'd keep it, but the trouble with Ubuntu based distro's is that Ubuntu will always be released first.

Been running Mint for quite awhile now..

Filter located in Menu for quick search
Slab menu
*Menu Favorites
*Right click of Folder gives the following options:
-Delete (rather than move to trash)
-Open as root
-Open in Terminal
*Theme
*etc....

Alot of naysayers say that above can easily be added to Ubuntu. Can someone tell me how? I am running Lucid on a Dev box and would love to add those features!

Doesn't do it all, there's still libdvdcss2 to sort out and if using 64-bit the included flash is awful, so it's a manual installation job.
It can all be done in minutes if you know how, but how many new users of Ubuntu know how?

The 64 bit support is just fine once that version gets released, which takes a bit longer as it's lower priority.
If you're happy with Ubuntu and it does all you need, there's not really any point changing to Mint.
