View Full Version : Which of the following is more nerdy:

jwbrase

1. That I know how to repartition a hard drive?

2. That I know what /home and / are?

3. That I care what /home and / are?

4. That I use an OS to which /home and / apply?

5. That I bought a computer with said OS pre-installed?

6. That I have enough software, and few enough photos, mp3's, etc, that I am not content with the amount of space that the manufacturer of my machine devoted to /?

7. That I am willing to repartition my hard drive to correct this imbalance?

8. That I have nothing better to do on a Saturday night than repartition my hard drive?

9. That I have nothing better to do while repartitioning than surf the web on the Ubuntu LiveCD's Firefox install?

I know all of these things, but I barely consider them nerdy. I know a lot more nerdy things than that.

I'd say the existence of this thread outlining 1-10 is the big winner here.. At least you didn't say low level formatting...

EDIT: Damn, someone beat me to it!

I do believe number 8 is the correct answer.

And i'm also guilty since i have nothing better to do than answer your questions on a saturday night.

Nah, to experience the full power of Vim you simply must be on a tty with screen. :-)

Staying home, following the progress, and surfing the web is #9.

Yeah, definitely more nerdy than me. I do in fact use gedit and GNOME, though I have been experimenting with vim. What is it, though, about vi, emacs, etc. that makes people like them so much more than GUI editors?

In any case though, this thread was more to establish what contributes most to my nerdiness, more than as a contest of nerdiness, as there are plenty of people that can beat me hands down (real programmers use a magnetized needle and a steady hand...).

It's Saturday night? Oh. :(

At the moment it's Sunday morning where I am, and I'm filling in times at the forums using my laptop running Vista which is busying itsself with some video stuff. (BTW, it's dual boot, I prefer to use Ubuntu for surfing but some of the software I use for other stuff doesn't work in Wine)

Arguing? There seems to be a fairly strong consensus on 8.

I currently have 13 on my main computer. Some are the same distro, but testing vs stable.

11 was the number for me, 2 Windows and 9 Linux's, all different distros mind you.

Point taken. Let's change that to "discussing it".

Of the others, I agree with 8 myself.

GASP!!
You mean, you don't have / /boot /var /tmp /lib /usr/ /root /home?! .. you'd better stop your current process and fix this D;

In the US in the days of my youth, Saturday was "date" night. Some movies and some places to dance were only open on Saturday. Lots of parties were only scheduled on Saturday.

Edit: Ah, the memories.
