Wanted to know whether a /boot partition is necessary or not.If necessary,What is the minimum size?
Also wanted to know minimum partitioning scheme.

I just use / and a swap partition. If you are likely to be reinstalling regularly it might be worth having a /home.
Though I guess you could get away with using swap files instead - not sure enough there to be definite.

Well but while installing the setup prompts for a /boot partition.what about it?

ubuntu asks you for a /boot partition? or are you trying to install some other distro?
