Hi all. I want a mid-range graphics card which can run a few good games decently and is well supported on Linux. My budget is around $70-$80. Could you guys give me some suggestions?

On a related note, are the any graphics cards which actually have open specifications and comprehensive open source drivers? Neither AMD nor Nvidia provide this. I personally use an Nvidia Geforce 8600GT and it performs worse in Ubuntu than in other operating systems.

I guess you could say Intel but they don't exactly make cards, and their drivers suck.

+1 to that. Though I'm using an Intel 945 on my laptop(which performs okay), I've an Intel 915 on my desktop which is as sh***y as it can get.

Hmm... looks quite good. How does it perform under linux?

I have only tested it with a few things but it will play any Linux game comfortably.

Anything NVIDIA will do nicely. ATI is getting there but NVIDIA works so well with Ubuntu that it'd be silly to look elsewhere really.

PS the 9series NVIDIA are fine, you'll get gta4 working well enough in windows on that, so most games will work on wine fine and native linux will fly.

I may actually upgrade to an AGP 4650 soon, ATi have improved that much.

I'm positive you can find a good deal on a graphics card like that.

I bought my NVIDIA GeForce 7650GS for $30 and it plays Team Fortress 2 on medium-high settings, Crysis on lowest but still very playable (as in around 20-30 fps).

+1 Once used a laptop with it. Horrible stuff.
