View Full Version : Top 5 loves and hates about your operating system(s)

A bit of light hearted fun. Name your operating system(s), roughly how long you have been using such (either consecutively or sporadically), and 5 things you love and 5 things you hate, in no particular order. This needs to be an operating system you are actually using.

So to start of, with this format.

Windows since 1983
Windows 7
5 loves
* awesome gaming rig
* does everything a computer ought
* leading edge software
* familiar and easy to use
* the standard, so everything is made easy
5 hates
* it isn't open source
* it isn't ubuntu (which has tangible character)
* limited themes and everything is $$$
* bloated
* needs massive resources to maintain security

Ubuntu since 2004
Ubuntu 9.10
5 loves
* Wubi (truly awesome!)
* the community, right here
* easy and fast installation (it just works)
* potential being realized, becoming the standard
* excellent focus and leadership of those creating this fine work to share
5 hates
* xorg and 3d NEVER works (I hate it)
* no games, 3d doesn't work anyway
* ATI and Nvidia are both useless and should open source their drivers
* brown, I prefer green, a nature not an earthy theme
* instant messaging and graphics are seriously behind what Windows 7 has

So what are your 5 loves and 5 hates of the operating system(s) you are running? It can be anything or everything. From the look of the mouse cursor to a line of code in the kernel - no wrong or right answers here!

:D

oo good idea for a thread! Ok I'll do this!

5 loves for Win 7 (been using it... a matter of weeks, maybe a month. Windows in general since I was about 7 or 8 though) -

Superbar
Snap
Gaming
Ease-of-use
Polished interface

5 hates for Win 7 -

Restrictive
Demands too high PC specs for Aero (for me anyway ._.)
A bit boring
Anti-virus/security issues
Some of my favourite programs are missing

5 loves for Kubuntu (at least 2 years, 6 years total on Linux OSs :) ) -

- Looks amazing
- Plasma
- K Menu
- Great software downloads and updating (of whole OS)
- Gives me total freedom
- Is exciting... awesome company, community and creator and... ok it's just 5 so I'll stop!

5 hates for Kubuntu -

- A bit rough around the edges so I need to install it via Ubuntu.
- Software can be clumsy to get or update (less support and package dependencies can still be annoying sometimes)
- Hardware support not always perfect
- Can't do as much gaming
- erm... oh, it takes a bit longer to startup/shutdown, at least on here :)

My biggest frustration with linux is the sheer number of dependencies reinventing the wheel at the cost of my RAM. Second is a similar vein, which is the whole gtk/qt ******** that cuts your application selection in hald.

* xorg and 3d NEVER works (I hate it)
* no games, 3d doesn't work anyway
* ATI and Nvidia are both useless and should open source their drivers:

That's odd you've had so many problems with 3D, I haven't had an issue in quite a few years. I have a fairly standard Nvidia card (Geforce 7600 or 800 I think it is) and yeah all works perfectly, only issue I have is my monitor not QUITE being set up perfectly (this only shows up when starting certain games).

ATI drivers are apparently improving as well, as a rule as long as you have the official Linux drivers from mainly Nvidia but also ATI you SHOULD be ok...

Sorry, off-topic I know, but I think these kind of posts are a bit inevitable! heh :)

You know you could get an ATI RADEON 9500 for about 200$? Probably get it even cheaper on eBay. Supports Aero to the fullest.

That's as cheap as it's going to get. Save up. :)

Wait, do I sense Christmas coming up? Heh.

$200? Newegg, $40 nVidia 8400GS will fully support Aero (and even play Crysis on low settings with no glitching!)

Arch, since 2004ish

Loves:
pacman/yaourt
speed
small footprint
easy to manage
the AUR
KDE is gorgeous, especially with compositing

Hates:
i cant keep up with it (it runs too fast on a phenom - had to throw that in :D)
64bit flash sucks
errr... i guess it could use some more games, simple games tho.. but thats why im learning python
i cant think of any more hates

$200!!!??!!!??? For a 7 year old video card series? I've got a 9600 XT that anyone can have for...ohh..more like...hmm....$20? :P

Anyway-

WinXP-
Loves-
Ran everything I chucked at it.
Nice app selection.
Lasted a long, long time.
Ran stable.
Never had any major issues.

Hates-
Locked theming support.
Restarting.
SP2/3 broke compatibility with Win2K.
No more 'per person' installs, just 'per computer'.
Awful, usless stuff in the OS. WMP? No thanks. IE? Yuck. Etc. At least nLite fixed some of those issues.

Windows:

Loves:
Not much these days actually.
If this was five years ago I would say maybe:
Ease of use (however other OS's can be easy to use given the chance)
Familiarity
Gaming (but I have consoles anyway)
But I have to limit it to 3 as I was never really happy with Windows.

Hates:
Limitations on customization
The amount of security flaws
The focus of bling over functionality
Microsoft itself

Linux:

Loves:
The sense of community
The sense of adventure
The sense of the OS being mine
The sense I can try almost any linux for free
The sense of freedom

Hates (more like dislikes):
Lack of support from software vendors
Lack of support from hardware vendors
Lack of recognition in the commercial market
Lack of reading material off line (It could help to have more linux books out there)
Lack of popularity, I wish linux was appreciated more as its helped me out of some tight spots in the past.

Windows since 3.1, 1995ish?, and now on 7:
Loves:
-polished interface
-one-click driver downloads!
-for me, everything works
-easy networking/connecting to various networks
-"libraries" in Explorer
Hates:
-lacks big selection of internet browsers
-hard to write code without buying(!) an IDE
-command line is kind of useless
-documentation for Windows services suuuucks
-I get lynched everytime ppl learn I don't have anti-virus

Linux since 1998? Red Hat 7.1, now on Xubuntu & Crunchbang:
Loves:
-I can change things
-terminal
-I can change things
-writing code is as simple as opening gedit
-keybindings!
Hates:
-difficulty getting drivers
-ndiswrapper
-powerpc support fails
-GRUB2
-sometimes I just want stuff to work

Mac OS X, since Leopard:
Loves:
-polished
-I can run a Unix terminal
-it feels faster than other OSes
-I get to use the awesome Apple keyboard
-99% of stuff works
Hates:
-I feel forced to use Apple applications
-stuck with the same theme
-no shortcut keys for menubar
-wtf is the control button for?
-I tend to think "I can do all this with compiz"

Mac OS X
Pluses:
Consistent, responsive GUI
Great software eco system. Most apps have that distinctive "Mac" feel to them
Great dual monitor support
Command key is better for keyboard shortcuts - planting thumb instead of pinky finger
Finder - column view, spacebar preview of many filetypes
Feature-full, WebKit based browser
Quicksilver
Menus at top of screen instead of attached to windows
Minuses
Not that many games
Only comes on expensive hardware - OSx86 only goes so far
Doesn't have a lot of the more "geeky" Linux tools, although a lot of stuff is available via MacPorts

Windows XP

Like;

Straight forward.
Stable.
Quick.
Ease of driver installation.
Less buggy UI than Linux.

Hate;

Microsoft technical support whose answer for everything is reinstall the O/S.
Malware/spyware/lieware.
Annoying hangs if several large files are in a single folder.
Defragging.
The fact that the PC can restart automatically after updating itself. Hate having to manually disable that *******.

Kubuntu

Like;

Doesn't use PulseAudio. <3 ALSA
Customizable.
Quicker than Vista.
Quicker than GNOME.
I like the feel of it.

Hate;

The bugginess. Way better than it was before but still not nearly good enough.
KPackageKit. Its infamy speaks for itself.
Konqueror as the default browser.
The graphics stack in Linux sucks with manually installed proprietary drivers.
Installing some software is painful.

2. Lack of driver support for my graphics card
3. 9.10

Apologies for lack of five loves & hates for each OS, I'm verbose enough already!

OS:Win98SE
Been using since 2001.

Love that it works really well on my old desktop. Hate that it's no longer supported & my favourite AV software doesn't work on it any more.

OS:Windows XP
Been using since 2004

? Stuck for useful comments. It works!

OS: Ubuntu
User since 2007

Secure, easy to use, great support, great community.

Lacked video editing software that I like the last time I checked. (Judging by threads I've seen recently this seems to be changing)

nVidia Corporation GeForce 6150SE nForce 430

I'm currently running version 180.44 from nVidia. Compiz works great, until I try to play a full screen game, them I left with garbage when I exit (or a completely white screen). That doesn't bother me so much as I'm not hooked on Compiz, but I'd really like to get the anaglyph thing working again if I could. It's more of a luxury than anything and I'm seriously not that troubled by it.

If you have any ideas I'd sure like to hear 'em! Already tried inputting "stereo" "3" into my xorg.cong file, but my logs say my card doesn't support it and only Quadros are supported. Don't know why it worked in Window's then...

I should update my profile. I use 8.04 on my laptop and 9.04 on my desktop, which is the one with the graphics card issue. My laptop has an ATI card, but it's really crappy - with or without Windows.

Actually, I'd say my ATI card performs better with Ubuntu than it did with Vista - go figure.

NO!!!

I've tried several times and each time it tells me I have to run in a specific run level or I have an x session still running, or some other problem, so I've just been using "envyng" (but no longer apparently) or the standard "Hardware Drivers" option.

hmm interesting, because I like to talk about myself :D

Ubuntu (I will consider this an operating system):

Likes:
- Easy to install
- Debian benefits like apt (so credit goes to Debian here)
- Security (whether by obscurity or by being better designed, I don't really care)
- Does everything I need (Word processing, web browsing)
- Runs enough games to keep me happy (chromium-bsd, hedgewars, nwn and more)

Hates:
- Essential upgrades can potentially kill my system. (just experienced it today)
- Nvidia drivers are annoying to install
- X feels unstable
- Annoying Flash support
- OpenOffice has formatting issues when saving in doc

I long for the day when there are enough Linux users that companies start using/accepting open standards, Flash support is good for Linux, and all Hardware is supported.

Haven't used Windows for half a year, so I am no longer qualified to make an opinion there.

Window XP: Love
Games like Warcraft.
Photoshop

Hate.
Virus, spyware, malware
Fat and bloated
Expensive

Ubuntu 9.10: Love
No virus very secure
Work on old machine
Free as in free speech
Fast even on old machine

Hate
Poor gaming (not really important)
Gimp is not Photoshop (but that its expensive)

I don't see much fault in Linux except certain software I need that is not available.

******* XP: Love
coLinux and andLinux can be installed on it

Hate:
Viruses, malware, spyware, $$$ antivirus software
everything is $$$$$
$$$$$ provokes piracy
Everyone (at least in my country) uses pirated software on ******* and they're happy with it, so they use ******* as they don't pay
Everything is closed source
Practically no customisability or flexability
No tty shells, no cool terminals, no bash

Ubuntu Karmic Koala love:
Highly customisable, can change everything with source tweaking and scripting
Open source
Superfast
Debian packaging system, apt-get, aptitude etc - Wonderful way to install, maintain and keep software up to date
easy development with open source GCC tools

Hate:
Proprietrary video drivers
Poor 3d
superslow flash player

Mac OS X love:

Hate:

OS X, about 3 years

Loves:
1. Apps
2. Apps
3. Apps
4. Apps
5. Apps

Hates:
1. Finder - can we have a proper filemanager please Apple?
2. iTunes - Congrats - you made a media player with no decent features and the ones you did remember to put in don't work very well. Coconut in the post.
3. iPhoto - worse than anything on Linux. That took some doing.
4. OS X itself - why is it sooooo sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooow? It's the 21st Century ffs. Amiga OS ran quicker in 1986.
5. Preview - oh wait, I can't click on one picture in a folder and open all the photos in that folder, I have to select all of them then open preview? what's that you say? use coverflow. COVERFLOW SUCKS I WANT TO USE PREVIEW.

Ubuntu 9.10 (linux user for about 7 years, I cant remember)

Likes:
1. Stable
2. Secure (although this relies on the user)
3. Lots of free decent apps
4. Hardly ever hard locks
5. Does everything I need it to.

Hates:

1. No decent third party apps support
2. Doesn't do everything I'd like it to (related to 1).

Can't think of another 3.

@ koshatnik- iTunes? suprise, suprise, apple just made that for an interface to iPods and for the iTunes store more than anything else. If it was a real media player, it would support more formats. Like native flac (no, flac in an ogg container doesnt count LOL) Lots of people like it though, so maybe I'm just another format freak with a dislike of big business media players.

Everyone (at least in my country) uses pirated software on ******* and they're happy with it, so they use ******* as they don't pay

What software do people pirate? I found that almost everything I did on win I could find a free app to do it with. Foobar for audio, EAC for ripping audio, VLC for video, DVDshrink + auto GK for ripping video, utorrent for torrenting, etc. The only thing I can think off offhand that many windows users I know pirate is photoshop.

Umm..at risk of sounding like I like windows more than I do, I never had a malware or spyware issue, only ever had a minor virus once, and never used paid for antivirus. Also, theres a ton of themes for winXP. Its quite customisable, really. Its just a pity you have to play with things like the UX Theme patcher to get them running. IIRC, microsoft originally were talking about making more standard themes for XP, and 'allowing' people to make thier own, but it never happened.

BTW, there isnt bash in winXP exactly, but there is a command line. Quite powerfull, if you learn how to use it.

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/ntcmds.mspx?mfr=true

Debian (Lenny)
Loves-
Stable. Like a rock on the ground stable.
All the general jazz you get with linux distros (like the / and /home separation)
Apt-get. Brilliant.
Secure. Without having to run some chugging anti-virus.
Does what I need it to.

Hates-
Not exactly cutting edge. Hmm, VLC 0.8.6h? Wasnt that the one that Noah used? Pre-flood.
lways wondering if maybe I should be using testing (see above)
Looking at exaile/sonata/blah blah and wishing that foobar ran native on linux *sigh*
People telling me that its easier to use ubuntu.
Umm...er....its got the name 'Ian' in it,a dn I once went to school with an 'Ian'. I didnt like him.

Ubuntu (Linux Mint actually, but meh, it's the same OS).

5 Loves:
-Package management. Simply awesome.
-Ability to customize nearly everything, especially the desktop.
-Terminal + GNU Screen.
-Hardware support. Everything works out of the box.
-Security. I don't have to scan stuff for viruses after downloading it.
Ehh couldn't resist: #6
-Multiple workspaces. I just can't use an OS without this awesome feature.

3 hates:
-9.10. Everything is just screwed up. I hope Lucid won't fail as much as karmic does, otherwise I'll switch distro.
-It may take a long time to load some applications (nautilus for example).
-Sound screws up sometimes.

alot of people have been bitching about 9.10. Its been superb for me.

The sound issue is a major problem though, that does need fixing in Ubuntu. Also agree about the slowness of nautilus. I think a major filesystem overhaul is required.

I'd use Thunar if it had tab browsing. Pcmanfm is somewhat "Thunar with tabs", but it doesn't detect file formats for me.

I have had about 3000 MP3's in a folder before and had no slowness in Nautilus.

Good to hear. Its been a persistent problem for me since I've used linux. Wish there was a easier way to change the default filemanager in ubuntu.

Currently an old P4 at home. In the office, the latest dual cores. Result is the same, slowness. Like I said, thunar on the same hardware is about 5 times faster. /shrugs
