I just restarted after installing updates for Karmic, including the newest version of the kernel. After I logged in, AWN refused to start up, saying that compositing was not supported and I needed to start compiz. I have no extra workspaces, no compositing, and when I go to Appearance Preferences under the Visual Effects tab, it won't let me enable them! A window appears saying that it is searching for drivers and then a minute later it informs me I can't enable desktop effects.

I am running Karmic on a Dell Latitude D610. My suspicion is the video driver. When I first installed Ubuntu a year ago (Intrepid) there was a full driver for my video card. When I installed Jaunty there was only a partial driver, and now I think there's even less support. I have an ATI card, I'm not sure which. Can someone tell me how to check? Is there some kind of a driver or fix for this please?

Thanks for the help.
