After I upgraded from Jaunty to 9.10 I had no sound through my M Audio 2496 card, even tho the 'puter was recognizing it (ID'd by the chip name). I did a clean install and that didn't fix the problem.

I followed these instructions for upgrading to Alsa 1.0.21 (http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2009/10/29/upgrade-alsa-1-0-21-on-ubuntu-karmic-koala-9-10/)from the ver 1.0.20 that comes with 9.10 and it worked (the second time). Be sure to follow the lengthy process exactly (i used cut and paste into my terminal). There is one point where if you get the error he speaks of you have to enter the commands he gives and then go back a window and repeat the commands. So don't miss this! Also, he makes it sound like the last step is optional. It is not. It is absolutely required, at least in my case. Good luck all!

WHOOPS! problem only solved for on-line sound (You Tube) and for Audacity recordings on the hard drive. MP3 files will not play (well, they play, but no sound!) HELP!!!
