"Solaris is a better Linux than Linux" (http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/ning.jsp)

It seems the StarOffice/OpenOffice guys have officialy entered the FUDFest. Take a look at their article as they compare Linux with Solaris.

I don't use OOo anyways.

Here's info about Gnome Office (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNOME_Office), which currently contains (among other things) AbiWord (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AbiWord). ;)

Although Sun would like OOo to be in Gnome Office instead. :(

I don't care which is better though, not if Sun is going to spread FUD.

But that still doesn't cover the other components, ex. Spreadsheets, Presentations, etc. :)

EDIT: Just saw that you edited your post before I noticed. :)

There's always KOffice (http://www.koffice.org/). :)

Hmm... This seems to cover server use... Is it a better Linux than Linux for the Desktop? Is it as flexible... As I understand it, Open Solaris is not GPL (correct me if I'm wrong).

For that reason alone I will stick with Linux.

Is it the open office guys? I don't even see mention of the word open office on the page...

Just because it isn't EXACTLY GPL doesn't mean that it's restrictive. It isn't EULA. In fact, it's under the Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL) based on the Mozilla Public License v1.1. ;)

The OOo project is maintained by Sun Microsystems in association with the community. They're actually the StarOffice (the office suite which OOo is based off of) guys, but I thought OpenOffice would be more likely to ring a bell. :) StarOffice and OpenOffice are the same, just different licenses.

Well in my book that doesn't mean the people who work on it. Anyway, it just seems like putting a spin on things with the use of "open office guys". Not all the development is done by Sun employees. It is some company called Ning that gave the data. Guy who made the mosaic browser, help found netscape etc.

I really like the work that has been done on open office. I have not had to use microsoft office in serveral years. I'm very grateful for it. I'll mention that this choice of wording set the thread off track, with a small bash at OOo and then talking about alternate suites (not that there is anything wrong with that, choice is good)...

EDIT: Well you edited your post while I was writing this one, but yeah I'd prefer if you had mentioned StarOffice instead. :)

Why did you label it as FUD? It was a dude speaking at a conference as to why he chose a certain platform for his business. Besides it is concievable that Solaris is better than Linux, it's a great OS and if you factor Sun hardware in should be as solid as a rock. It's also free and open is Linux compatible. I don't see it as FUD, I'm sure Red Hat has the same kinds of endorsements from "famous" people. Just part of the competition.

While I dont like the massive differences in their numbers, I would assume that for mission critical stuff its better to have a SPARC computer with Solaris... As you know you have a company for support. But then again, same with Novell and Red Hat... So I think it is too close to call.

Solaris is developed by Sun, what else should they say? "Stop using our product and switch to Linux"?

Dudes, it's a friggin testimonial from a satisfied Sun customer. Of course Sun is going to use stuff like this to sell its own brand of Unix if it can.

Kinda stupid question, but does "FUD" mean?

But that means I'd have to click a link, and I'm far too important for that...

j/k! Thanks for the info. :)

Microsoft and Sun made a deal to make both of their commercial Office formats compatible with each other. The next release of Star Office will have on advantage over OO.o and that is it should seemingly work with all of MSFT Office apps where the support in OO.o will still be limited.

Spreading this FUD about Solaris vs Linux is just a marketing ploy to get more companies to consider Solaris as a alternative to both Windows and Linux in the enterprise market. Since they are currently behind both in adoption they are just getting desperate and are resorting to MSFT tacticts to convince people to switch.

I'm not sure that qualifies as FUD, they were basically saying "we think Solaris is better than Linux" not "Using Linux instead of Solaris will give you problems".

Not to mention that they stress the fact that they can work well together. Meaning that companies can run Linux based desktops with Solaris servers backing them.
