I need some good, high quality headphones for around $100. I was looking at the Sony MDR-V6 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826159110). Would those be good? Whats the difference between normal "Over the head" headphones and "Stereo/DJ" headphones?

I've got Sennheiser PX100s (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826106333), would I see much of a difference between those and something like the Sonys?

Thanks!

Thanks, but earbuds don't really fit well in my ears.

For $100, you can get the Sennheiser HD555; much better than the Sonys. Same Sennheiser 'house sound' as the PX100s, but more accurate (and the most comfortable headphones I ever had!).

'Stereo' means nothing - all headphones are stereo - 'DJ' generally signifies that the headphones have closed backs. That means they isolate more from outside noise, but sound quality suffers. They often have an emphasised bass and horrible styling. ;)

Well Newegg lists the HD555s as "Stereo/DJ" too, so I suppose it's just a marketing term they use. Unfortunatly they're $130 which is a bit out of my price range. Would the Sonys be significantly better than my PX100s, so that they're worth the $70? Or should I just stick to my PX100s?

I just bought a pair of Sennheiser eH150 Evolution.

Under £20 and sound like they cost at least three times that.

Very comfortable, block a lot of ambient noise out, great bass etc.

Personally I only ever buy Sennheiser, (my DJ'ing phones were just under £100).

Oh, and DJ 'phones tend to have revolving earphones to allow the user to only have music coming into one ear comfortably.

I bought some akg k 81s for $50. They are really nice for the money although they take some breaking in.

I know you're not looking for earbuds, but honestly the best headphones I've had are my JVC Marshmallows. They're not the typical earbud, they're cusioned much like earplugs and sound really good. They're cheap ($20), but in my opinion offer a really good range, solid bass, midrange, and highs. The only thing that bugs me about them is that the cord is too short.
