I am using ubuntu 9.10. I sheduled a time for auto shutdown through terminal by using
shutdown -h xx:xx
but later I planned to shutdown my system before the sheduled time. I tried to stop the action in terminal, but it didn't work. so I suht down my pc in normal way. But it didnt shut down although the login screen came up there. I tried to shut down again but it didnt work. Then finally i noticed the desktop environment option. I opened that & it was diplaying the following
gnome
xcfe
matchbox

I found this match box a new one so I selected that. a black screen came with an application launcher in the bottom left corner. In that also very few options were coming. Neither terminal, nor home folder, nor shut down options were coming. Nothing was working over there.
So finally I restarted my system, but as I had kept an option for automatic login in my gnome desktop, this new desktop only got opened. I cant format my system as I have very important data over there.

Please help me how to get back to gnome environment.

Thnx in advance
