But it will not boot i dont understand why?

Do you have only one drive? Are there any specific error messages? What is happening exactly?

Which version?
Any other OS on the system?
What was the install process (did you use the alternate install or wubi)?
Any messages, during installation or booting, which might help to isolate the problem?

I have to hard drives one that im using right now and a new one that i got sense the one i have now is on its way out.

I got error 17 said ubuntu was on there but would not boot.

Im using ubuntu ultimate edition 2.4

I just selected the use whole hard drive for the install.
