View Full Version : Ex-*buntu users: What do you use now?

This is a poll for those who have had Ubuntu as their main system sometime in the past, but have moved on to a different distro. I am just curious to see if a distro singles out.

If you use more than one distro, select the distro you use most.

If your distro is not among the above, please specify.

Other comments are also welcome.

Fedora, but i'm coming back to kubuntu at some point, every distro has strengths/weaknesses and i feel that ubuntu (or possibly open-suse that i am yet to try) suits me best.

I`ve tried Arch, Mandiva, Puppy, Suse, Fedora and zenwalk + a few others.

I always go back to Ubuntu though, although I haven`t used a proper desktop install for a while.

Ubuntu server or minimal (depending on the box) built up from there.

I left Ubuntu and then tried OpenSUSE, Fedora, Mandriva, Linux Mint and Xubuntu. I came back Ubuntu suits me the best. It pays to try others though.

This. Gotta love it how distro fanboys always assume everyone uses one single distro, and loathes all others with a passion.

Do I get to vote if I still use Ubuntu along with a bunch of other software distributions?

Thought about changing it to multi vote, but settled on this:

If you use more than one distro, select the distro you use most.

This poll is for ex-*buntu users, but I can`t stop you voting whatever you want. :)

Don't really see any problem with the idea of a "primary OS", no need to get worked up about it.

just vote for your primary distro, technically i have 3/4 distros about but fedora is the one i use when i want to get work done.

I haven't totally left Ubuntu. I have it running on the desktop and server at this point in time, but my laptop is currently running Fedora 12 (KDE) and I'm enjoying it.

I'm enjoying fooling around with a different distro's methods/philosophies as well as getting used to KDE.

I'll probably have Ubuntu around for the most part because it is easy to setup, maintain and update as well as having the most number of 3rd party apps not in the repositories built for it.

It used to be, "I could fool around with Linux distros because if all else fails I can install Windows over it". Well now it has become "I can fool around with it all I want because if all else failes I can install Ubuntu on it".

I do still use Ubuntu besides Mac OS X, but since I got a MacBook Pro I use OS X as my main OS.

I have been using Mandriva since 9.04 and 9.10 I consider too buggy. I might come back for the next LTS version as I used Hardy for over a year and it was stable.

For me stability is more important then having latest and greatest but I do at least need the current browsers and email clients.

I'm using Arch on a laptop and a desktop, and Ubuntu on another laptop (used to be Xubuntu, but switched it to the regular Ubuntu a while ago). I also have a desktop with W7 and a netbook with XP. The latter would probably use UNR, but the Broadcom 4322AG wireless adapter is very poorly supported (read: basically not at all) in Linux. My mistake for not checking this carefully enough in advance, though, or rather, believing the vendor's incorrect description of the specs. :/

Skype works fine on mine, except for the video screen from the webcam. It is tiny (@ 3" x 3") and cannot be re-sized. I do have to use Skype headset. Skype does not recognize my audio hardwares for some reasons.

Funny, I'm almost the opposite. My Skype allows me to see/hear the other person, and he can hear me but can't see me.

The webcam works in Cheese though.

Arch mainly, and occasionally Windows 7. My distro path went Ubuntu -> Debian -> Arch. I think I'll stick with Arch for quite a while, it suits me best. All three great distros though, and they're all installed in some form (either on another partition, another computer, or in a VM).

I'm currently checking out Fedora.

I feel lonely in doing so. With Ubuntu I got sort of a home-y feeling because of the community.. heck, even the brown/orange helps on that. I sort of feel like a bad person for using Fedora.. haha.

I'm checking it out because till now I have only really run Ubuntu.

I'm checking it out because I am starting to shed my n00bness and thus don't need as much support and more confident.

I think most importantly why I want to check it out is because of future employment. I have worked in the IT industry, and that is also where my degree is leading me and considering Red Hats role in business I think it would be good that I am comfortable with their stuff.

I would still recommend Ubuntu over Fedora to people.

Don't feel so bad about it, and the people in the Fedora forums are pretty nice. Plus you'll notice a number of people in the Ubuntu Forums frequenting the Fedora forums too (same with the openSUSE forums too).

I enjoy how over 50% have moved to Arch.

It actually surprised me. It also makes me wonder how well a rolling release distro would do that installs an Ubuntu-like "complete" system out of the box.

I think the "x months" release model is too server-oriented, and probably one of the aspects that holds Linux back in the desktop market. It's counter-intuitive for people used to other OSes.

Sidux is an "out-of-the-box rolling release" distro (KDE, Xfce). It is very similar to Ubuntu in many ways (both are based on Debian Sid). It is #22 at distrowatch, so I'd say they're doing pretty well. Then of course there is Debian Testing, another out-of-the-box rolling release (Gnome, KDE, Xfce, LXDE) that's not as "bleeding edge". Debian is consistently in the top 10.

I disagree with your 2nd point; though... "x month" release is wonderful, and the users who don't like it seem to find out about Arch easily enough, for some reason. ;)

Arch here as well. Quite surprised by the result of the vote.

While I do not use Ubuntu anymore, I still think it is a great distro and I recommend it to new users. However, I slowly outgrew it myself as I became more comfortable with Linux. Arch is just the right distro for me now.
