I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a Dell Poweredge 1400SC for use as a file server. I'm going with the desktop version rather than the server version as I prefer a graphical interface until I become more familiar with Linux (newbie).

I've downloaded both the 9.10 desktop and 9.10 desktop alternate CDs. When I try the 9.10 desktop, the installation simply hangs with a kernel panic error. When I try the 9.10 alternate CD, it starts installing, but part way through I get a "problem reading data from CD-ROM" error.

I've burned the CD twice and I've checked the MD5sum of the download and it is fine. What else could be causing this?

try the check cd option, also did you burn at low speed?

I checked the CD and it came back with an error which is why I burned the 2nd CD. I'll try the slower burn speed but I've never had an issue with this before. What is the chances though that both CDs had problems at the exact same point.

Avoiding burning on cheap discs might help as well.
