I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a Dell Poweredge 1400SC for use as a file server. I'm going with the desktop version rather than the server version as I prefer a graphical interface until I become more familiar with Linux (newbie).
I've downloaded both the 9.10 desktop and 9.10 desktop alternate CDs. When I try the 9.10 desktop, the installation simply hangs with a kernel panic error. When I try the 9.10 alternate CD, it starts installing, but part way through I get a "problem reading data from CD-ROM" error.
I've burned the CD twice and I've checked the MD5sum of the download and it is fine. What else could be causing this?
