View Full Version : [ubuntu] What data to copy to new install?

I have an installation of Ubuntu 9.04 on a 320GB HDD. I have installed 9.10 on a new 500GB drive.

Everything on 9.10 is up and running fine, it is pretty much just a basic install with one or two other programs installed. Now comes the copying over of my old data.

I am looking to try to copy over most of the settings I had previously. Nothing too extreme or too many custom scripts so it should be somewhat straightforward. I am figuring tonight I will copy over my /home from the old drive to the new one.

What else would you copy over? I am not sure what to copy without older versions of programs from 9.04 messing up things in 9.10 I am not sure which directories I should copy over and which I should just leave alone.

Thanks for any input.

Normally the only thing you would copy over is /home/<username>

Everything else has to do with system files. I always like to keep a copy of /etc from mu old system which is where system config files are stored but don't copy this over your existing /etc.
