I am using ubuntu desktop and would like to setup a server to share files over the internet, so per say if i was at a friends house I could go on his computer go on the internet and view and download certain files. Basically something where i wouldn't have to install any type of software on the computer i want to have access the server. If you could give me a step by step(dummys) guide i would appreciate it, im not new to using computers by any means but just new to linux and i wanted to learn something new instead of using windows server, Plus ubuntu is open source! Thanks for all the help.

You'll be needing to run apache and I use dyndns for pointing the internet to my machine. Can't help with the howto, it's been to long since my install to remember!

Hey glad to hear that ur moving to linux.

Well I have just almost finished setting up my server on ubuntu desktop. But it's been a while since I started and so dont remember the initial processes :D There are a lot of resources on the web for setting up servers on ubuntu.
On ubuntu you'l be using APACHE. Check out this link below on how to set it up. Then a DNS server - BIND.

http://www.brennan.id.au/13-Apache_Web_Server.html#config

Also check out http://www.bit-tech.net/bits/2007/06/05/build_your_own_server/1

Wish you luck.
