I see it as a pointless question. Best for what? Or for whom?

What's best for me won't be best for someone else.

I think the 'best OS' idea is dumb, simply because there is no such thing.

best for what task?

From a user point of view, stability, safety, features, cost and ease, i would have to say Linux. Distro would have to be up to the user.

I would vote ubuntu, but it really depends on the user, the task and the hardware.

Went downtown last week, to the club. I was chilling at the table with my homegirls, and spot a handsome stranger on the dance floor.

Our eyes meet.

He waves me over and we start grooving to some mad tunes. In between songs this guys asks "Which is the best os in the world?".

I replied "OS/2 Warp".

He says "Are you sure?".

I said "Of course I am sure".

Actually, that's a hardware distribution of the GNU/Sandwich operating system.

Of the OSes mentioned so far I have copies of Windows (98SE, XP & Vista Home Premium), Ubuntu & CP/M (haven't really used, I have no application software for it!)

I wonder if someone will one day come up with a variant of Ubuntu that will run on the human brain....

Yeah and if you ask a bunch of Linux/Windows/Mac users, you'll get a biased answer.

Just look at some of the posts in this thread so far.

It does depend what you want to do with it. I really do think all OSs have their strengths, and I also think saying Windows is just "the best" is ignoring the clear advantages of Linux and Mac, just as the opposite is true.

At the moment, I maintain that there is an even playing field between the main 3 :)

Also I think it's interesting that whenever I log into Windows 7 to play games I usually find myself on these forums doing the same thing I'd be doing on Ubuntu :x

+1: When I've logged into Vista to do some video editing, I quite often visit the forums while waiting for the effects to render.

Windows XP or Ubuntu, depending on your uses.

Windows XP, because it's a pretty good OS from Microsoft and it runs most of the Windows apps you need to run.

Ubuntu; no viruses/spyware/crapware, free, open source, easier to use... (IMHO)
