There's a relative I might be converting to Linux, so in preparation for that possibility, I BitTorrent the latest ISO (9.10), burn it, and figure I'll upgrade my own machine while I have the disk out.

I boot and log in; everything's looking fine. I insert the CD, which it recognizes, and I start the upgrade process, which appears to be going smoothly. It finishes and tells me restart.

Yet, when I restart, the following happens:
it freezes on a screen that says:
"
Boot from (hd0,0) ext 3 [hex value]
Starting up...
"

Specs: laptop, x86, was Ubuntu-only, 8.10 I think. 512 MB RAM

I could try to use that CD to do a clean install (since I don't have any critical files on that drive), but I'd rather avoid that, especially if the problem is obvious to y'all.
