View Full Version : [ubuntu] uvc video camera is suddenly not being detected

My video camera was one fo those things that always worked, and I was proud. One day, though, my camera just stopped being detected whenever I go to "cheese" and I've got no idea why it happened, or how to fix it :(.
I turned on usbcore.autosuspend=1 , but that was a while ago and I'm quite sure that my camera's worked since then, so I can't think of any reason why things just up-and-broke.
Sorry I didn't post my hardware specs, or any log files -- I don't know what and where they are (respectively!) Can anyone help me? If so, please do!

I tried removing usbcore.autosuspend=1 but that failed, now I've no idea where I should start looking...

Run lsusb
Cheese itself is the culprit if your webcam is already in the list. If your device is not in the list try another usb port.

It's an internal camera inside the laptop's lid, so I can't change the port -- but it's listed! Thanks, I guess cheese is just busted.

Yes, much better. There's a bit about the device failing to initialize, though, but it says the device is "registered" at the last line... Could this, then, indeed be the problem that I'm having?

This appears to have happened to a number of people, but I have yet to see a solution. In my case, the webcam is failing under 4 different OS's (XP, 9.04, 10.04, Mint 9). I don't know if I have a hardware failure, or if something can be done to wake up the built-in webcam in my Acer netbook.

It's hard to believe that so many people would have webcam hardware failures on different brands, with what appear to be exactly the same symptoms. Yet, so far, I have been completely unable to find a way to make the webcam wake up.
There is a description of a fix here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=793513
But it's obsolete, in that it deals with Hardy, and makes reference to a subversion library that appears no longer to exist:

So, I'm back to square one. Inability to initialize the internal webcam seems to such a common problem across multiple brands of net/notebook computers and operating systems, that you would think there are some solutions out there (other than sending it in for repair). Since my problem exists under multiple different OS's, I am now leaning to a hardware problem that is unrelated to anything I did recently. I purchased a 1 year extended service contract when I bought the Acer, but of course, that expired about 60 days ago. I almost never use the webcam, so I am giving up on this problem until and if someone reports a workable solution.

What has to be done to initialize the camera? I'm beginning to feel like I have most of the necessary information, but I don't know how to apply it. I suspect it involves blacklisting a driver in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf, then enabling the appropriate driver for the Microdia camera somewhere else, possibly in /etc/rc.local. But the devil is in the details, which are currently beyond me.

Thanks. I tried that; still no camera function. Since the camera worked up until 2 weeks ago, and since it now doesn't work under any OS, hardware failure still seems like the most likely possibility. I know, from previous encounters with Acer that a repair would cost more than the netbook is worth. If loss of the camera really bothered me, I'd just get a newer, faster, longer running netbook, and transfer the SSD to the new machine.

Assuming this is a hardware problem (i.e., broken built-in webcam), but I don't care if the camera works or not, I blacklisted uvcvideo in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf. This stops the uvcvideo probe failed error message during boot.
Is there any reason I should NOT do this?

I've been getting this error message when using Motion with 2 Logictech C260 webcams running at the same time but only when I stop and restart motion.
The fix I've come up with is to manually remove the uvcvideo video driver with "rmmod uvcvideo" and then reload it with "modprobe uvcvideo". Then restart motion.
I can then see both webcams using motion.
